Microsoft may add a new customization option in an upcoming Windows 11 update – one that could solve a feature that is irritating to a large number of users.
According to a Twitter user @PhantomOfEarth (opens in a new tab) and reported by MSPowerUser (opens in a new tab)Windows 11 Dev Insider build 25300 includes three strings that allow you to disable the date and time in the taskbar on the right side of the taskbar. These strings are “Hide the taskbar clock”, “Hide the time and date in the system tray”, and “Enable this to hide the time and date information in the corner of the taskbar”. Most likely the setting will be in the taskbar as there are other settings that configure it.
However, at this point, all of this is still just conjecture. Finding these strings in the build does not guarantee implementation. And even though the feature has been confirmed to come to Windows 11, we still don’t have a release date.
What does this mean for Windows 11?
Personally, I consider the date and time on the taskbar to be one of the most standard and useful features of the operating system. It’s incredibly convenient to just look to the right and see the exact time of day, especially when you’re engrossed in other projects that would otherwise conflict with my concept of time.
However, having more customization options is never a bad thing, and considering it now, Windows 11 is long overdue for some overhaul in this regard. Another useful feature is the ability to display multiple time zones in the taskbar – useful in work environments that require communication and teamwork between employees around the world.
There are plenty of other features Microsoft can test out, and if this one drops and becomes popular, hopefully that means even more options in the future.
